I went looking for a decent explanation of Israeli Krav Maga and found this video on Youtube. I would suggest not bothering to read any of the comments which are the usual mix of “I can kick your ass, blindfold” and borderline racist pretending to be humour, however the video does describe some KF techniques and is worth a skim through if nothing else.
Some of you may not have heard of Krav Maga a style forged in Israel and widely regarded as one of the most practical and street orientated martial arts in existence. Here’s a little about it from various sources.
Krav Maga is a fight orientated self-defence system developed in Israel in the late 1940s and currently used by the Israli Defence Force. Combining striking techniques, wrestling and grappling it is known for its focus on real-world situations
Krav Maga emphasises threat neutralisation, simultaneous defensive and offensive maneuovers, and aggression. Krav is one of the few martial arts in which footwear is habitually worn, due to its being ‘reality-based training’ and there is little if no attention paid to bowing or the formalities you see in Judo and Karate.
A key principle is finishing a fight as quickly as possible. To do this the most vulnerable parts of the body are the first points of attack, eyes, groin, throat, attacking fast with multiple techniques to stop the attacker as soon as possible.
Typical a student will learn to defend themselves a variety of attacks before engaging in full-contact sparring, this will be with the aid of padding and protection equipment but can still be a shock for martial artist used to the discipline of the dojo or ring.
Students are taught to respond to attacks in the quickest and most efficient way, a jab to the eyes, or an attack to a limb. Many school emphaisise the use of improvised or adhoc weapons in a fight.
If there is a school near you, consider yourself lucky and go and check it out.
